Taboo is a very popular game among adults, as it is often played at parties and other social functions. Taboo requires the player to use clues so that their partner can say a specific word. However, the player cannot use the word itself or any of the other five words listed on the card. The player also cannot use his hands or other parts of the body to represent the word. This sounds like a difficult game for younger children, but it is actually very helpful to them for their future.
# 1: teach kids to be innovative
Taboo is unique in that it forces the player to give clues about a certain word that are not obvious clues that would lead the player’s partner directly to the word. For example, if the word were basketball and the taboo words were “hoop,” “board,” “sport,” “free throw,” and “court,” the player would have to think of another way to get his partner to say basketball without say none of those taboo words.
One of Taboo’s concepts is to find another way to get in when the most common way is not an option (the most common way is analogous to taboo words in the game). Often in life one must learn to find detours or find another way when the obvious path is blocked. Examples of this include: 1) finding a different material to build something if the material you are looking for is not available or 2) thinking of another way to fix something when one way does not work. Playing Taboo gives young children the opportunity to develop the innovative skills they will need later in life.
# 2: The taboo also teaches young children how to thrive under the pressure of time
Even if the player can find words that are on the taboo list, they must have their partner guess as many words as possible in one minute. This type of time pressure can force the player to make mistakes under pressure, such as accidentally hitting an illegal clue. In real life, the pressure to perform on tight deadlines is always there. Taboo helps young children understand what time pressure is all about and helps children set out to thrive in that environment.
